Course Overview

The Commercial Pilot training course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge required to operate an aircraft at a professional level. This Part 61 syllabus ensures compliance with FAA requirements and prepares students for the Commercial Pilot Certificate check ride. Training focuses on advanced aircraft control, precision maneuvers, commercial operations, and regulatory knowledge.

Prerequisites:

  • Private Pilot Certificate (PPL)

  • Minimum 250 total flight hours (per 14 CFR 61.129)

  • 100 hours Pilot-in-Command (PIC) time

  • 50 hours cross-country flight time

  • 10 hours of instrument training

  • FAA Medical Certificate (2nd Class or higher)

Course Structure

The course consists of ground training, flight training, and a final check ride preparation phase. Training will emphasize complex aircraft operations, commercial maneuvers, and cross-country proficiency.


Phase 1: Advanced Aircraft Control & Commercial Maneuvers

Ground Training (10 hours)

  • Commercial pilot privileges and limitations

  • Advanced aerodynamics and high-performance aircraft operations

  • Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) related to commercial flying

  • Aircraft systems and performance calculations

  • Human factors and aeromedical considerations

Flight Training (10 hours)

  • Transition to complex aircraft (constant-speed propeller, retractable gear)

  • Steep turns, chandelles, and lazy eights

  • Power-off 180-degree accuracy landings

  • Emergency operations and system malfunctions

  • Review of instrument flight procedures


Phase 2: Cross-Country and Night Operations

Ground Training (10 hours)

  • Flight planning for commercial operations

  • Weather theory and advanced interpretation of forecasts

  • National Airspace System (NAS) and ATC communications

  • Fuel planning, weight & balance, and performance charts

  • Professional decision-making and risk management

Flight Training (15 hours)

  • Day and night VFR cross-country flights (minimum 2-hour flight, 100+ NM)

  • Night takeoffs, landings, and operations

  • Diversions, lost procedures, and emergency scenarios

  • Commercial-level navigation and pilotage

  • Short-field and soft-field takeoff/landing proficiency


Phase 3: Commercial Operations and Emergency Procedures

Ground Training (10 hours)

  • Commercial flight operations and real-world applications

  • Aircraft maintenance and inspections under commercial regulations

  • Single-pilot resource management (SRM) and automation

  • Advanced weight & balance computations

  • Mock oral exam and check ride preparation

Flight Training (15 hours)

  • Solo cross-country (300 NM minimum, three stops, one leg over 250 NM)

  • Emergency landings and system failure procedures

  • Maximum performance takeoffs and landings

  • Refinement of commercial maneuvers

  • End-of-course stage check and mock check ride


Final Stage: Check Ride Preparation

  • Ground Review (5 hours) – Oral exam preparation and scenario-based discussions

  • Flight Review (5 hours) – Check ride maneuvers, commercial operations review

  • FAA Check Ride with DPE

Total Minimum Hours:

  • Ground Instruction: 35 hours

  • Flight Training: 40 hours (additional training based on student proficiency)

Completion Standards:

  • Demonstrate mastery of commercial maneuvers to ACS standards

  • Pass the FAA knowledge exam

  • Successfully complete the FAA check ride

Additional Notes:

  • Flight training will be conducted in both single-engine and complex aircraft

  • Students must maintain an accurate logbook and training records

  • Additional hours may be required based on individual progress
